//Notes
A case that concerns most diesel owners who drive mainly in town, gently, shifting at around 2,000 rpm. From the first pull on the dyno, this Ford Fiesta Mk7.5 1.5 TDCi was producing heavy smoke from low to high revs. The car was completely stock, with 100,000 genuine km and excellent maintenance, so something was wrong.
Inspection showed the DPF was 88% clogged. After a 30-minute static regeneration the soot load dropped to 24%, the smoke disappeared and performance returned. With one more regeneration the level could be reduced even further.
The initial measurement was 91 ps and 219 Nm, and after Stage 1 the car reached 123 ps and 284 Nm, a gain of +32 ps and +65 Nm, with clean running, flawless response and not a trace of smoke.
Tip: take your diesel out on the open road whenever you can, holding a steady 2,500–2,800 rpm in third gear for 25–30 minutes. Your engine and DPF will thank you.
